Can I use Stepping B MMC-1 Modules on 6000?

There is a new type of MMC-1 CPU, which is designated as "Stepping B". This is identified by Product Tracking Code (PTC) of PMDxxx05002AB, where xxx indicates the CPU speed in MHz. You can also distinguish the two types of CPUs by looking at the capacitors on the IMM module. Stepping A have yellow capacitors, and Stepping B have black capacitors.

Older ChemBook™ 6000 systems do not support Stepping B modules, but newer ChemBook™ 6000 systems support both Stepping A and B. To identify whether your 6000 supports stepping B, look for a small white label with the number "2" around the CPU fan. If the label is there, then the system supports stepping B.

Warning: If you attempt to install the Stepping B module into a system which does not support the stepping B module, you risk damage to either the CPU module, the system, or both.

Note:There will not be any systems accepted for service or return for the purpose of supporting stepping B CPUs.

Which BIOS version should I use?

There are two different BIOS versions currently available. The version you should download is dependent on the type of video controller installed on your system. If you have a 2D Neomagic controller, then you should download the BIOS update file whose compressed file name begins with "60v". If you have a 3D ATI Rage LT Pro controller, then you should download the BIOS update file whose compressed file name begins with "60pa".

Caution: Updating using a BIOS version which does match your graphics controller will cause the system not to boot up.

How do I update the BIOS on the 6000?

To update the BIOS on the 6000 to the newest version, follow this procedure :

  1. Boot from a DOS diskette without Himem or any memory manager loaded. Or press F8, then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt.
  2. From the directory containing the BIOS update files, type "Phlash 0307.rom /mode=3".
  3. Do not interrupt the program until the system reboots automatically. Then, enter CMOS setup.
  4. Load default setup.
  5. For Windows 95, make sure to enable Plug and Play OS support.
  6. Save and Reboot.

Why can't I open PC Card PCMCIA in Windows NT 4.0 Control Panel?

After you install Card Executive for Windows NT, the PC Card PCMCIA icon in Windows NT 4.0 Control Panel will be disabled. To view the status of PCMCIA cards, please use the Card Executive 2.0 for Windows NT, also located in Control Panel.

Why is there an exclamation mark on the USB Controller in Windows 95 OSR 2.x?

Please make sure that the Plug and Play OS Setting in the Advanced menu of the BIOS Configuration utility is set to Yes.

Why does it take so long to shut down Windows 95?

This is caused by the real mode CD-ROM driver, which was necessary during installation of Windows 95. To remove it, remove the following two lines:

  • In CONFIG.SYS, remove "device=(cdrom).sys..".
  • In AUTOEXEC.BAT, remove "mscdex...".

Why doesn't my 6000 resume from standby mode in Windows 98?

If you experience problems with resuming from standby mode in Windows 98, you may have an ethernet card in the PCMCIA sockets. Typically this problem occurs if you are suspending for the second time after boot up. This is caused by the Yamaha WDM audio driver built-in in Windows 98. You will need to update your Audio Driver to fix the problem. Go to the FTP Download page to download this audio driver for Windows 98, and Installation instructions for how to install it.

What is the effective range of the Infrared port?

The effective range of the IR port is up to a distance of 1 meter and an angle of 15 degrees.
